Aquarium Systems Nitrite Test Kit

Uneaten food, fish waste and other organic nitrogen-containing compounds are broken down by bacteria into ammonia and, in a further step, into toxic nitrite. This nitrite is further processed by other beneficial bacteria into nitrate, which in low concentrations is not dangerous.

In a well-functioning aquarium or pond the nitrite value should be less than 0.3 mg/L.  In particular in the initial or start-up phase of the aquarium or pond, the filter bacteria have not developed well and so regular monitoring is very important in order to avoid ammonia or nitrite toxicity, which is harmful to animals.
