The pH value is one of the key parameters of any aquarium or pond. The pH value indicates whether the water is acidic or alkaline.  Most fish and the nitrifying bacteria prefer alkaline water. Biological processes in the aquarium water can cause the pH value to drop over time. Since all inhabitants of aquariums and ponds are very sensitive to changes in the pH value, regular monitoring is required.
